The Houston Astros needed someone to make a spot start for the injured Wandy Rodriguez. Lucky for them, they just happened to have former starter Brian Moehler in their bullpen. Manager Cecil Cooper said before the game that he would be “tickled” to get five innings out of the 36-year-old right-hander, and that’s just what he got.

It had been almost a year since a New York Mets starter pitched more than eight innings. John Maine ended that drought and his teammates made it easy for him with their second-best offensive output of the season. Maine took a shutout into the ninth and the Mets routed the Los Angeles Dodgers and Brad Penny, 12-1 on Wednesday.
